Hawa Koomson Appointed Caretaker Agric Minister

The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has been tasked to take temporary charge of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

This follows the acceptance of the resignation of Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Dr Afriyie Akoto, who has served at the Ministry for six years, resigned on Tuesday, January 10.

He is said to have personally presented his letter to the President.

He is reported to be interested in becoming the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

On Thursday, January 12, President Akufo-Addo through his spokesperson conveyed his “sincere” gratitude to the outgoing minister and wished him well in his future endeavour.

According to the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, President Akufo-Addo subsequently tasked Madam Hawa Koomson “to act as caretaker Minister at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture until a substantive replacement is made”.

So far, two ministers – the other being Alan Kyerematen – have resigned from the government over reports that they are readying to contest the upcoming presidential primaries of the ruling party.
