Alexander Akwasi Acquah, Member of Parliament for Akyem Oda Constituency, claims that the country’s recent panic withdrawal from mobile money transactions is the result of detrimental misinformation by the Minority in Parliament.
Due to the untruth pushed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) politicians, he said, people who have their money in Mobile Money Wallet have began withdrawing.
Due to the adoption of the Electronic Transfer Levy Bill, the trend of Mobile Money transactions in Ghana is said to have fallen.
Prior to the approval of the Bill, also known as the e-levy, opposition legislators vehemently opposed the new tax, claiming that it would exacerbate the country’s harsh and terrible living circumstances while also bankrupting small enterprises.
However, Ghanaians were taken aback when Parliament passed the contentious e-levy despite the Minority’s walkout from the chamber.
This appears to have driven the people to remove money from their Mobile Money Wallets under the guise of not wanting their limited funds to be taxed.
However, in an interview with Onua TV on Tuesday, April 5, Oda MP Akwasi Acquah stated that the e-levy is the most promising tax for the government to generate sufficient cash for development in Ghana.
He emphasized that the Minority is aware of the new tax’s revenues, which is why they are attempting to criticize the government while also making the e-levy unpalatable to the general public.
“The country’s frenzied rush for MoMo withdrawal is only propaganda,” he added. “I know the masses would pretend not to favor mobile money transactions because of the e-levy for the time being, but I assure you that they will comprehend with time.”
“It is natural that Mobile Money transactions have decreased since the passing of the e-levy,” he said. “However, I am confident that if the masses witness development from the profits of the new tax, they will support the government.”
Following the passing of the e-levy bill, the Vice Chairperson of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Trade, Industry, and Tourism is optimistic that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not disappoint Ghanaians in developing and transforming the country.
In the current difficult times, he urged the general populace to remain steadfast and rally behind the government, emphasizing that Ghana has a bright future.
