Otto Addo Drops Wakaso, 6 Others For FIFA World Cup Qualifiers Against Nigeria

Interim Black Stars manager Otto Addo is said to have sacked seven players from the side that competed in the 33rd CAF Africa Cup of Nations last month in Cameroon.

According to sources, the Borussia Dortmund assistant coach has cut seven players from the Black Stars roster that competed in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup playoffs against Nigeria’s Super Eagles later this month.

Mubarak Wakaso, a China-based midfielder who was unable to participate in the Afcon owing to injury, has been declared missing from the squad.

The game will be played without Ghana captain Andre Ayew, who is serving a two-match suspension for a red card he received against Comoros at the Africa Cup of Nations event in Cameroon.

Former Ghana U-20 and Dreams FC defender Philimon Baffour, who has joined Rio Ave of the Portuguese Second Division, has been omitted from the squad, as has Real Tamale United FC captain and midfielder David Abagna Sandan.

Benjamin Tetteh, a former Ghana U-20 international and current Yeni Malatyspor striker, has been dropped by CAF after being caught on camera punching a Gabonese player during the Afcon after Ghana’s 1-1 draw with the Panthers.

Other players with poor performances include Great Olympics forward Maxwell Abbey Quaye and St. Gallen goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi.

In the Swiss Premier League, the Saint Gallen shot-stopper has consistently conceded goals (44 in 23 games).

According to sources, Aduana Stars striker Bright Agyei, Bechem United forward Augustine Okrah, and Asante Kotoko midfielder Mudasiru Salifu are all being kept an eye on for a call up.

Ghana will face Nigeria at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on March 25 before traveling to Abuja for the second leg four days later for a place in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year.
