If the government’s revenue mobilization initiatives, such as the electronic transfer levy, are not supported, according to Deputy Finance Minister John Kumah, the government may be unable to meet some essential payment obligations.
Despite the fact that he has refuted reports that government workers may not be paid in the next three months, he believes the E-levy must be passed in order for the government to avoid a financial crisis.
While many have attacked it and called it backwards, the administration thinks it is a game-changer.
In an interview with Citi Business News, John Ampontuah Kumah, a Deputy Finance Minister, elaborated on the Speaker of Parliament’s views on government worker salaries.
“First and foremost, it is not true that the government will be unable to pay workers in the next three months; let me assure you that workers will be paid. On the point made by the Speaker of Parliament, I believe he made a sincere appeal to all members of parliament to move beyond partisanship and support government domestic revenue mobilization projects, particularly the E-Levy, so that the government does not face a severe budgetary restriction.”
“Despite the fact that Parliament has passed the 2022 appropriation bill, which means that the government must spend, a crucial component of the income that will enable you spend (the E-Levy) is being opposed in parliament. So the Speaker has voiced genuine fear that if we don’t assist government, it may get to a point where key government payments will be difficult to perform,” he continued.
On the margins of the inauguration of the Ashanti regional youth Parliament, John Kumah made this comment as a guest speaker on the topic “The Ghanaian Taxation System and the Sustainability of Her Development.”
The Ashanti regional minister, Simon Osei Mensah, and the Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority, Pius Enam Hadzide, both spoke at the ceremony, emphasizing the importance of Ghanaians supporting the E-levy.
