The Chiefs in Kwahu in the Eastern region say, they will no longer accept any justification about the abandoned Abetifi District Hospital project.
The Chiefs have therefore entreated the government to secure a loan to complete the project as soon as possible to enable residents to have access to quality healthcare.
Speaking during a courtesy call on the Kwahu Traditional Council by the Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Acheampong, the Krontihene of Abene – Nana Simpeh Owiredu III said “one of our major problems is the Abetifi hospital. We don’t care who started it, it is state funds that are being wasted. So we entreat the government that, even if it is a loan that government has to take to complete the hospital it must be done.”
The abandoned Abetifi Hospital is part of the six new District Hospital John Mahama-led NDC government was constructing under a $175 million contract signed with NMS Infrastructure LTD of the United Kingdom in 2012.
The other district hospitals were in Sekondi, Kumawu, Fomena and Garu-Timpane, Dodowa District Hospital
Apart from the Dodowa Hospital which was completed and commissioned in April 2016, all the other Hospitals have not been completed after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) left power.
In 2019, the Member of Parliament for the Abetifi, Bryan Acheampong explained to the people that, NDC government diverted funds for the completion of the project to research its electoral fortunes in 2016 reason why the project stalled.
He said it was absurd that an area with a population of over a hundred thousand people does not have a Hospital. He promised that the Nana Akufo-Addo-led government will look for funding for the completion of the project.
The Kwahu Traditional Council says the government has not demonstrated commitment to completing the Abetifi Hospital project to the detriment of access to quality healthcare in the area.
