Court should’ve imposed heavy fine on ‘disgraceful’ John Mahama for wasting Ghana’s time – Akua Donkor

Madam Akua Donkor, founder and Leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has expressed regret that the Supreme Court failed to impose a heavy fine on flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) after he wasted the court’s time.

According to her in an interview re-streamed on Happy FM’s Epa Hoa Daben hosted by Don Kwabena Prah, Akua Donkor said such a fine would have served as a deterrent to others who in future planned to waste the court and the nation’s time with such petitions.

She labelled the former President as someone who has brought disgrace upon Ghana.

“Former President Mahama should be made to pay a fine in the area of trillions. He should be made to pay that fine for disgracing us as a country. This will appease the nation and also serve as a deterrent to anyone who plans on doing a similar thing in the future”, she said.

Her comments come when after close to three months of sitting, Ghana’s Supreme Court gave its final verdict on the 2020 election petition hearing in which it dismissed John Mahama and his NDC.

With 5 days of pre-trial hearings and 12 sittings, the ruling exercise was the 18th and 63 days since the petition was filed on December 30, 2020.

The 2020 NDC Presidential Candidate, former President John Dramani Mahama dragged the Electoral Commission and President Akufo-Addo to court, challenging the validity of the December 7 election results. He had prayed the court to nullify the declaration and to cause a re-run between himself and President Akufo-Addo.

The court however re-affirmed Akufo-Addo and Bawumia’s re-election.
