GES sets new dates for BECE, WASSCE

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will be written by students in September/October and November respectively.

The GES has said it has spoken to the examination governing body West African Examination Council (WAEC) to effect these new dates starting from 2021.

This was communicated by the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa who said these new dates will definitely allow for students to prepare adequately for their final exams.

“Per our arrangements, we expect that the next exams will be written in September/October, and we have already started discussions with WAEC on that.”

“We needed to make provision for marking and release of exam results and reopening so if we decide on October/November, it will be difficult for WAEC to release exams early enough for admissions to take place in January.”

“So, per our calculation, we have proposed September /October, and we noticed that when we use these dates, we would have covered 1,700 hours and will only be short of one-hour contact period which we can always make up for,” he said.

Meanwhile, students at all levels will be returning to school for the first time in over nine months following the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic in Ghana; the president has announced.
