Mahama or no President – Hanna Bissiw leads NDC Women to protest

The National Women’s Organiser of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Hanna Louisa Bissiw on Tuesday led the women’s wing of the party to demonstrate against the declaration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the President-elect of the December 7 general elections.

About 1000 of NDC women hit the principal streets of Kumasi to demonstrate against Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) and President Akufo-Addo with some wielding placards some of which read “Jean Mensa dangerous to Ghana’s democracy, stolen verdict, Mahama or no President, God save Ghana, the media has lost its credibility” among others.

In an interview with Pure Fm’s Osei Kwadwo, leaders of the demonstrators disclosed that the Electoral Commission (EC) boss Mrs. Jean Mensa rigged the elections to favour President Akufo-Addo.

“Akufo-Addo and NPP didn’t win the election as it was declared by the Electoral Commission. The elections were rigged and it was flawed. We are not going to accept the outcome of the elections” they said.

They added that “If Electoral Commission boss Jean Mensa does not declare John Dramani Mahama as President-elect then there is no president in Ghana”.

President Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) won Monday’s general election with 6,730,413 representing 51.595% while his main contender John Mahama of the NDC had 6,214,889 representing 47.366% according to a declaration by the EC.

But flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Mahama has argued the outcome of the polls insisting they were characterized by fraud for which reason he is not conceding defeat.

“I think that in the interest of the more than 6million people who voted for me, I must uphold our democracy and hold the Electoral Commission to a higher standard and hold this government to a higher standard in terms of our democracy. The way President Akufo-Addo and the EC have conducted this election is a dent on our democratic credentials as a government. And so with my principles as a democrat, I can’t be seen to be sweeping it under the carpet and letting it go.” He revealed.
