Supporters of National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) in the Tema East Constituency on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 embarked on a demonstration in Tema Newtown against the arrest and detention Monday of the Party’s Tema East parliamentary candidate, Mr Isaac Ashai Odamtten.
Mr Odamtten and nine others have been charged with six counts of financial loss to the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, among other charges, allegedly committed during his tenure as the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tema.
The Tema East Constituency NDC candidate was on Tuesday granted bail in the sum of GH¢1 million. He was yet to satisfy the bail conditions, leading to his detention at the Tema Community 11 Police station.
The development led to scores of NDC members converging at the Tema Community 11 police station at about 11:00pm on Monday evening in protest of Mr Odamtten’s detention and to demand his immediate release from police cells amid the singing of the NDC party anthem.
A section of the youth in Tema Manhean also kept vigil on Monday night, blocking the main road near the main station and burning spent car tyres in protest against what they said was an ‘unjust arrest and intimidation’.
They were however dispersed at dawn on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 by a joint police and military team.
