The Ghana Health Service (GHS) in the Central Region has revealed that drivers, farmers and teachers are the groups of workers wreaking havoc by impregnating teenagers in the region.
Addressing some youth groups in Ekumfi, the Nutrition Officer at the Ekumfi District Health Directorate, Lydia Acquah , disclosed that 3,198 teenage pregnancies have between recorded between January and May 2020 only, stressing that the situation of teenage pregnancies has become pathetic and there was the need for pragmatic steps to stem the worrying situation.
Male drivers, farmers and teachers, it came to light, were the ones taking advantage of unsuspecting and vulnerable teenagers and impregnating them. These teenagers then get abandoned to their fate, making their lives difficult.
Speakers at the event advised teenagers to be wary of unscrupulous men seeking to exploit them sexually but rather take their education and training seriously.
A worrying trend, bemoaned by the health authorities, was the failure of young people to take advantage of health friendly clinics in areas set up to help them with their sexual and reproductive health.
Sexual Transmitted Diseases
The youth were educated on sexually transmitted infections and diseases and how they can keep safe or seek appropriate medical help.
The programme was organised by National Youth Authority (NYA) with support from other stakeholders.
