Coronavirus: 6,000 samples taken for testing – GHS

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced that so far about 6, 000 samples have been taken for testing throughout the country amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Director-General of the GHS, Dr Patrick Aboagye, disclosed this during the Information Ministry’s media briefing on events on the outbreak of the disease in Ghana.

According to him, his outfit is currently testing all people who have been identified through contact-tracing.

“As at 6:pm yesterday, over 6,000 samples had been taken for testing throughout the country and testing is still ongoing. We’re testing all people who have been identified through contact-tracing,” Dr Aboagye added.

Breaking down the cases, Dr Aboagye said: “We have 58 people on admission at the facility in Ga West with two people on oxygen at the moment.  The Ridge Hospital has four patients on admission. The 37 Military Hospital has one person on admission with six people on homecare. Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital has one case on admission. At Obuasi, there are two cases which are both being managed at home,” he added.

He said 49 patients have been discharged for homecare adding that some health personnel will be trained on how to use ventilators in ambulances.

Ghana as of Thursday had its total confirmed case count of COVID-19 standing at 204. The number includes three recoveries, five deaths and a good number of people reported to be responding well to treatment.

The Information Ministry over the period has been bringing Ghanaians up to speed with Ghana’s situation and progress in fighting the virus through its press briefings.
