Ghana has received its share of coronavirus test kits and prevention materials donated to Africa by Chinese billionaire and co-founder of the Alibaba Group, Jack Ma on Wednesday morning
Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed Ali announced the delivery in a tweet on Wednesday, at the time that the West African nation had kick-started a National Day of Prayer and Fasting against the deadly SARS- COV 2.
“This morning #Gabon, #Ghana, #Congo and the #DRC have received their #COVID19 prevention materials. The 2nd shipment of supplies from @JackMa & @AlibabaGroup containing 540k medical grade masks and 20k protective clothes is on its way to #Ethiopia.Dispatch to Africa will continue”, the tweet read.
Ma has also pledged his Jack Ma foundation will collaborate with local medical institutions in Africa to provide training materials online for the clinical treatment of coronavirus.
It is unclear how much Ghana has received from the donation to augment its own efforts, but the nation still awaits some 50, 000 test kits procured from abroad by the government; “to beef up supplies for our frontline health workers”; President Akufo Addo announced in his last televised national address.
A statement from the Ghana Health Service said “The sudden spike in case incidence is as a result of the mandatory quarantine and compulsory testing for all travelers entering Ghana, as directed by the president. As of 24th March, a total of 1,030 are under mandatory quarantine; 844 have had their samples taken; 510 have had the samples tested; and out of these twenty-six (26) tested positive for COVID-19”.
At the time filing this story, the country’s media space had been taken over by churches, fronting the National Day of Fasting and prayer declared by the president.
Though Ghana is fighting the spread of the disuse by instituting a number of austere measures, including but not limited to the closure of schools and suspension of all forms of social gatherings, shutting all of its borders to human traffic and quarantining all travelers who used the Kotoka International Airport a day before its shut down took effect, divinity has also been invited to intervene.
Ghana boasts a population dominated by Christians and Muslims, though the traditional religion and other beliefs thrive there too; the nation unites today to raise up prayer to God to heal the land based on the words of scripture, 2 Chronicles 7:14.
