‘Go to court and desist from baseless allegations and issues with the EC’ – Nana Obiri Boahen To NDC

The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen says if the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has any qualms with the Electoral Commission’s decision to compile a new voter’s register, they should proceed to court and desist from baseless allegations and issues.

Reacting to the EC’s decision to compile the new voter’s register, he argued that “If the electoral commission says it will compile a new voter’s register, anyone who objects the EC’s decision should go to court” adding “If it affects you as an individual go to the high court and if it is the interpretation of the constitution, go to the Supreme Court”.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Kwaku Dawuro on Anopa Nkomo on Accra based Kingdom FM 107.7, he stressed on the issue that “Anyone who thinks the Electoral Commission’s decision to compile a new register is inconsistent with an intervention of the constitution should go to court”.

Speaking from a legal perspective, the Deputy General Secretary indicated that, Article 45 1A of the 1992 constitution of Ghana talks about the duties and responsibilities of an Electoral Commission the EC’s decision is by operation of law.

He further quoted the 1992 constitution by saying “Article 45 1A, the right to compile; the duties of Electoral Commission, the right to compile the electoral register. Therefore it is the Electoral Commission’s right and responsibility to compile a new register legally”.

Lawyer Obiri Boahen noted that “NPP is very good in terms of seeking redress from the Supreme Court. NPP as a party and its supporters seek redress from the court from 1992 to date. Out of 100 cases, 96 are recorded in the court by NPP”.

NPP’s Nana Obiri Boahen, therefore, explained that the main motive behind the compilation of a new voter’s register by the EC is to avoid bloated register with names of unqualified persons inconsistent with the constitution and encouraged the EC to compile a fresh one.

He alleged that “NDC’s allegations are baseless. I will not listen to NDC’s baseless allegations and baseless issues. Some of these things are just ridiculous”
