Sammy Awuku Takes NDC To School On EC Limited Registration Exercise

The National Organizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Awuku today took the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to school on the ongoing Limited Registration Exercise.

The limited voters’ registration exercise took off smoothly on Monday, 17th June, 2019 in most designated centres across the country.

The commencement of the exercise comes after the Electoral Commission was given the green light by the Supreme Court to go ahead with the exercise after an injunction suit filed against the process was dismissed.

The Opposition NDC has expressed strong reservations over the exercise accusing the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of bending the rules of the registration exercise and so they are calling for the right thing to be done immediately.

Sammy Awuku expressed disappointment in the NDC over their accusations and such claims that some centers have not been published but to him, “looking at Gazette no 78 all these centers have been spelled out clearly unless the NDC did  not have some of  the gazette book.”

Mr. Awuku, speaking on “Kokrokoo talk show”, he explained that the Electoral Commission has two types of registration which include online and offline registrations.

He noted that the “online registration is when you go to the EC’s district registration centre to register which is straight forward and there are centers which are offline because of internet connectivity so all these have been put in place to fast-track the process.”

He  also said “for one to get genuine Voters ID Card, he or she has to go through EC’s process smoothly…When somebody is in doubt about somebody’s identification, what normally happened is to filL a Challenge Form but that doesn’t prevent the person from going through the registration process…after registration process, then comes the Revision stage of the voters register’s process”.

The laws also permit those challenged to appear before EC for clarification and the accuser as well has the right to respond to what he or she has been accused of…after this, then the exhibition of the Voter’s Register…here there are two issues involved; if you think there is a name which is not supposed to appear on the exhibition level, then you fill an Objection Form…again, if the name of a person is changed on the exibition stage…you can fill an Inclusion Form for the error to be corrected…we then have a Provisional Voter’s Register, then we can finally come to the Voter’s Register which is the final stage of the process”, he elaborated.

Sammy Awuku told host Kwami Sefa Kayi that the NDC has got it all wrong to point fingers at the NPP, saying “what NDC is saying is not true…it is propaganda and I think NDC has not been fair to the EC and Ghanaians”.

He appealed to  the youth who have attained the voting age to move to the registration centers and get themselves registered.
