‘We can fight the symptoms of corruption in Ghana’ – Kwesi Pratt

The Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper believes corruption can be fought in this country by first tackling it symptoms.

According to him, Previleges given to some government officials has to be streamlined so they do not abuse their office.

“How can an appointee become so powerful to the extent that no one dare to question their actions or even their wealth”.

Also the veteran Journalist noted that laws to look into our financial sector need not to be put aside for anyone to do what pleases himself or herself. To him, if all this measures are put in place, he can confidently say that corruption which has become normal thing in the country will be reduced.

Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo morning talk show, Mr Pratt who was also not pleased with comments by the President and indicated that he expected President Akufo-Addo to give the blueprint to fight corruption but, the first gentlemen of the land was rather defending his government of not engaging in any manner of corruption.

To him, the President failed to tell Ghanaians measures his government has put in place to fight corruption but rather described Civil society organisations, youth activists, religious leaders, diplomats, journalists as detractors seeking his downfall.

“When I heard he was going to speak I was excited. I thought he was going to show us how he was fighting corruption. However, he decided to be defensive and I was disappointed because that was not what I was expecting.”

While addressing the 2019 Conference of the Ghana Bar Association, in Takoradi, in the Western Region, the President who for sometime now has been tagged as the “clearing agent”, indicated that he does not the power to clear his appointees of any wrongdoing but there are accountability institutions in the country that look into cases of corruption and clears appointees of corruption Allegations.

“It is not my job to clear or convict any person accused of wrongdoing, or of engaging in acts of corruption…it cannot be the case that people are condemned on the basis of mere allegations. That is the law of the jungle”.
