The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo has reiterated that the upcoming Referendum in December this year is not to solicit the views of Ghanaians on whether they want Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives to be elected.
He said the Referendum is to amend article 55(3) of the Constitution which will provide the choice for Ghanaians to contest for local government office on either partisan or non-partisan platforms.
Speaking to Inside Politics host Mugabe Maase on Power 97.9 FM which was monitored by ghanawish.com Monday afternoon, the former Local Government and Rural Development Minister urged Ghanaians to vote ‘No’ during the Referendum to maintain the sanity in the local government level.
“The district Level is where national policies are implemented, so if we allow partisanship to take centre stage, we will be hampering development,” he said, explaining that the cost of the district level elections will cost the various political parties millions of cedis to support their candidates who he said were about 7,000 across the country.
To him, not only will corruption heighten at the local level but security will be compromised from the national level down to the district level
