Use $100m Cathedral Money To Fight Off Coronavirus – Sekou Nkrumah To Akufo-Addo

The Second son of first President of the Republic of Ghana Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Sekou Nkrumah has advised government to use the funds earmarked for the National Cathedral project to fight the deadly coronavirus.

This is after government applied to the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund for budgetary support as part of its fundraising effort to fight Covid 19.

This comes after Ghana recorded its 7th Coronavirus case as part of a vertical infection, meaning all 7 cases were imported into the country.

Reacting to this, Sekou Nkrumah said that “Money for the Cathedral project should be used for coronavirus! Period”. He wrote.

Last year November, Finance Minister, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta revealed that the country will spend an estimated $100 million to put up the National Cathedral.

Even though the government came out strongly to deny that government will not spend a dime on the construction of the National Cathedral when the issues first cropped up.

Mr Ofori-Atta while presenting the 2020 Budget on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday said that the actual construction of the Cathedral will commence in March 2020.

He said the government will complete the selection process for a contractor by the end of December.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s political talk show ‘Ekosii Sen’ programme on Thursday, the Finance Minister announced that the board overseeing the construction of the Cathedral will spend up to $100 million on the Cathedral.

”The National Cathedral would cost about $100m…,” he said in response to a question on how much the government will likely spend on the Cathedral.

He further said that government will is ‘giving a seed money of about 10-20m Dollars for the construction of the Cathedral.’
