#UGDecides: SRC Judicial Board overrules EC’s annulment of election results

The Judicial Board of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council has overruled the decision of the SRC Electoral Commission to annul the polling results of some four polling stations.

Barely 24-hours after the declaration of provisional results by the Electoral Commission, it was announced that results of some four polling stations had been annulled; a decision which has been condemned by some political stalwarts in the University of Ghana.

The four polling stations included Commonwealth Hall polling station, Mensah Sarbah polling station, Jean Nelson Aka Hall polling station and the Korle-Bu campus polling station.

In a release signed by the Chairman of the EC, Mr. Roland Eyram Tettey, the nullification of the results in those polling stations was as a result of cases of over-voting in some of the polling centers.

He added that technical difficulties and the subsequent resignation of the Electoral Commissioner at the Korle-Bu Campus necessitated the cancelling of results.

However, in a hearing to determine whether it was constitutional for the University of Ghana SRC Electoral Commission led by its Chairman Mr. Roland Tettey, to annul some of the polling results, the Judicial Board of the SRC ordered for fresh elections to be held at two of the polling stations – Jean Nelson Aka Hall polling station and Korle-bu campus polling station.

In effect, the polling results of the Mensah Sarbah Hall polling station and Commonwealth Hall polling station still hold.

The decision of the Court was on the basis that there were no reported cases of electoral irregularities from the Mensah Sarbah and Commonwealth polling centers by either the presiding officers or the polling agents of the candidates.

The full verdict of the Court is yet to be published.
