Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Boamah Otukonor has revealed that the current voters register is the most credible register in the continent.
According to him, there is no problem with current register thus he sees no reason why the Electoral Commission(EC) is forcing new voters register on the political parties.
” There is no problem is the voters register, the same register was use to elect President Akufo-Addo in 2016 and the just elected ended metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs) elections. The current register is the most credible register in the whole continent,” Peter Boamah Otukonor exclusively told Lawyer Ohene Gyan on ‘Pae Mu Ka’ on Kumasi-based Kingdom FM 101.1
The Electoral Commission has served notice a new voters’ register will be compiled ahead of the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.
He said the party will resist any attempt by the EC to push the idea of a new register since there is not enough grounds for the creation of a new one.
Background
Parliament has approved GHC 443,646,663.00 to enable it compile a new voters’ register ahead of the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.
The head of the EC, Jean Mensa, has stated that there is the need to compile a new register given that the register currently in use is overstretched even though it is accurate.
Many people have objected to the compilation of a new register due to the cost to be incurred. But the EC insists the cost will be worthwhile.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has however kicked against the new register arguing that the EC is purposefully attempting to disenfranchise some people with the new register.
