The Municipal Director of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development in Assin Fosu, Mr Ebenezer Nana Amofa Appiah expressing the need to curtail the high prevalence rate of teenage pregnancy in the municipality called for stiffer punishment against perpetrators to deter others.
Speaking in an interview with Kwame Asante Shadrack of Assin Fosu base Rich Fm, Mr Amofa stressed that the future of every nation rides on human resource and since children formed the base of the human resource it is imperative to put appropriate measures such as strict laws in place to ensure their survival and development.
His remark comes after a report from the Assin Fosu Municipal Heath Directorate indicating that teenage pregnancy is rising high in the municipality.
He implied that the survey conducted by his outfit about the increasing rate of teenage pregnancy suggested a lack of requisite parental care and control, noting that, the girls easily get influenced by adult men to engage in sex.
Mr Ebenezer Amofa Appiah who appeared unhappy with the news advised parents not to see their children getting pregnant as fashion but must work hard to prevent it.
