Residents of Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) quarters around Ahenfie Hotel, in Takoradi, capital of Western Region, have been instructed by the Assembly to relocate by 7th August 2020 to pave way for the construction of the new market circle for Takoradi. This, according to Authorities, forms part of preparations toward the reconstruction of the Takoradi Market Circle.
The residents are, however, appealing to the Assembly to give them enough time to prepare for their relocation.
According to some anonymous residents who spoke on ‘Adekye Mu Nsem’ on Takoradi based Spice Fm 91.9 this morning, they were officially informed on 6th July 2020 which means, they are only left with a month to prepare for their relocation.
The assembly is expected to clear up the location as part of designated temporary market to contain market women who will be affected during the reconstruction of the market.
They went ahead to appeal to Authorities to consider them since with the challenges associated with the fight against COVID-19 and its impact on standard of living, “ample time for relocation will be a step in a right direction”.
The reconstruction of the Takoradi market circle has been on the drawing board for sometime now. The NPP government made it part of their agenda since 2017. It had a mention in the 2018 and 2019 budgets, but nothing has since happened.
What is on the lips of many people in Takoradi is “when will the market be constructed? Or will this is also be another unfulfilled promise. We wait to see”.
