Policeman reportedly tests positive for coronavirus after arresting suspect

A police officer at Adentan in Accra has reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 after arresting and detaining a suspect who defied the lockdown directive.

According to Starr FM sources within the security agencies, the suspect, who was apparently positive of the virus, was detained for a longer period at the Adentan police cells after court hearing because the prisons service was not accepting new inmates as a result of the pandemic.

A source at the Adentan district police command says the officer has been asked to self-quarantine after he tested positive.

Meanwhile, the Upper East Region has recorded 10 more cases of COVID-19 bringing the regional total of cases to 18.

The District Chief Executive for Pusiga confirmed the development to Starr News Monday.

Positive cases of the virus in the region stood at eight as of Sunday.

The new cases are spread among the Bawku and Bolga Municipalities, Kasena-Nankana, Bawku West and Pusiga.

Similarly, cases in the Western Region has shot up to nine.

Sources at the Western Regional Health Directorate told Empire News’ Emmanuel Ohene-Gyan that six cases were recorded in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.

Five of these cases are returnees who live in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis while the other one has no travel history.

The source further briefed Ohene-Gyan that the other two confirmed cases were recorded in the Nzema East Municipality, Axim to be precise.

The Western Region had its first confirmed COVID-19 two weeks ago from a Chinese national who works with Coastal Quarry Company in Shama.

“These are new cases, it has nothing to do with our contact tracing with the Shama one, the Shama cases are still pending awaiting results,” the source emphasized.

The Western Regional Health Directorate is set to brief the media Tuesday about the new confirmed cases.

Coronavirus death toll in Ghana now stands at 11 with 1,550 infections and about 150 recoveries.
