Police, BNI Immigration and Army ready themselves For Imminent lockdown of Kumasi, Tema, Accra Etc.

Barring to the last minute changes, as some major cities in the country including Tema, Accra, Kumasi and Obuasi face a lockdown to curb the infection rate of the deadly coronavirus as declared by president Akufo-Addo as he address the Nation a fortnight yesterday.

According to reports gathered by Ghanawish.com, the Ghana Police Service, Berueu of National Investigation (BNI), Immigration Service and The Ghana Armed Forces, are ready themselves For Imminent lockdown of Kumasi, Tema, Accra Etc.

As at the morning of 27th March 2020, a total of fifty-seven (57) cases including three (3) deaths have been confirmed from the regular surveillance systems. All the three (3) cases that unfortunately succumbed to the disease were aged and had underlying chronic medical conditions. All the other fifty-four (54) cases are well; fourteen (14) are being managed at home and the rest are responding well to treatment on admission in isolation. They are awaiting their test results and will be discharged when the results are negative.

Majority of the confirmed cases are Ghanaians, who returned home from affected countries. Seven (7) are of other nationals namely: Norway, Lebanon, China, Netherlands, and the United Kingdom (UK).

The number of confirmed cases among travelers under mandatory quarantine who have been tested is seventy-eight (78). In respect of contact tracing, a total of 1,006 contacts have been identified and are being tracked.

Out of these, two hundred and four (204) have completed the 14 days mandatory follow up.

Some documents from the Ghana Police Service indicate that the possibility of a lockdown in these areas is quite high. “It is recalled that following the outbreak of the Corona Virus in Ghana the Ghana Police Service (GPS) has taken various initiatives aimed at enforcing directives from relevant authorities in the country. Operation Order Number NNCVOPS/ORD/v01.1/98 and Signal Number F.HQ/OPS/ORWVOLV dated 24 March, 2020 refers. As a follow up to the measures already in place to combat the pandemic, it is anticipated that a partial to full lockdown of some parts of the country will be executed In a bid to contain the spread of the Corona Virus. It is further anticipated that four (4) titles namely; Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Obuasi will be amongst the first batch of cities to be locked down. In line with the contingency measures for the Corona Virus Operations in Ghana, the GPS, the Ghana Arm. Forces (GAF), the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) and the Bureau of National investigation (BNI) will undertake a Joint Internal Security operations to enforce the Lockdown”, a classified document read in part.
