Police arrests bride, groom at wedding ceremony

Personnel of the Ghana Police Service have arrested a bride and her groom during a wedding ceremony at Darkuman-Nyamekye Masalachi, Accra, for breaching President Nana Akufo-Addo’s ban on social gathering as part of measures to curb the spread of coronavirus which has, so far, killed eight out of the five hundred and sixty-six confirmed cases in Ghana.

Some twenty-seven guests of the couple were also arrested.

About the same number of guests also escaped arrest.

Those who were arrested have been cautioned and given police inquiry bail.

They are scheduled for court this week.

A few days ago, a similar arrest of a couple and their wedding guests occurred at Obuasi.

The police arrested forty-nine people in that raid.

Just recently, the President signed the Executive Instrument (EI) extending the duration of restrictions imposed under EI 64 and EI 65.

By this, the restrictions imposed on public gatherings, under EI 64, have been extended for a further period of two (2) weeks, with effect from Monday, 13 April 2020, the Director of Communication at the Presidency said in a Facebook post on Sunday.

Mr Eugene Arhin added: “As announced already, the restrictions imposed on the movement of persons in Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Kasoa, under EI 65, have been extended for a further period of one (1) week with effect from Monday, 13 April 2020”.

He said: “All other provisions, including all exemptions in EI 64 and EI 65, are still in full force and effect”.

The President imposed the initial ban on social gatherings on March 15, 2020.

The ban affects all social gatherings such as church and mosque services, as well as schools, funerals, weddings, conferences, workshops, festivals, political rallies, and sport activities.
