Operation Vanguard, the Joint Task Force (JTF) Forward Operating Base (FOB) Eastern, of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and Police Service (GPS), which has been mandated to ward off illegal mining activities across the country, in an operation conducted, has arrested 31 suspected illegal miners within the general area of Akyem Abomosu, in the Atiwa West District, Eastern Region.
27 of the suspects, who are locals, are currently in the custody of the Kwabeng, Osino and Anyinam District Police Stations for further investigations onto possible prosecution, whiles the rest, 4 foreign nationals from Equatorial Guinea, have subsequently been handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) and in their possession were 3 gold detecting machines which are currently being held in evidence in the investigations.
In the Central Region, the FOB Central has apprehended three (3) other locals suspected of illegal mining around Buabinso/Kyekyewere, in the Upper Denkyira East District and were handed over to the Kyekyewere Police for further action.
And in the FOB Western, an excavator that was seized by the JTF, in the Western Region and handed it over to the Inter-Ministerial Committee against Illegal Mining (IMCIM), whiles other operations resulted in the immobilization of a total of ninety-four (94) Changfans.
