The New Patriotic Party (NPP’s) failed parliamentary aspirant for the Klottey Korley constituency, Nii Noi Nortey, has finally declared he will contest the November 7 elections as an independent candidate. Nii Noi Nortey’s contender, Philip Addison emerged winner after a re-run of the primary, beating him by a slim margin.

This was after Nii Noi had won in the previous contest. His unhappy supporters impressed on him to contest as an independent candidate even though the national leadership pledged to calm tensions there and present a united front for the November 7 contest.

However at a press conference on Wednesday, Nii Noi Nortey announced that after careful consideration, he has finally arrived at a decision to vie for the parliamentary slot, but not on the ticket of the NPP. “It has gotten to this because the masses, the youth, the voiceless are calling onto Nii Noi Nortey to stand as an independent candidate. I am for the people. I aim to serve the people,” he explained. He further accused the party of scheming against him. “What is it there for an organization that cannot protect its own? I have done my part for his party.

I have been obedient. I have been respectful… what we got back in return was for a party to go out there and not to defend its actions, what we got back in return was for the party to organize an election just to favour someone else.” Addison polled 396 out of the 765 votes cast to beat Nii Noi Nortey, who polled 367 votes.

The decision by disgruntled member of the opposition New Patriotic Party to go independent in the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Klottey Korle constituency will benefit the NPP flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Pollster Ben Ephson has said.

“This is good news for Nana Addo and the NPP party as a whole. Akufo-Addo stands to benefit from Nii Noi’s decision- it would have been a big blow to Nana Addo if Nii Noi had not taken such a decision at all.”

He explained a sheer apathy by Nii Noi’s supporters could have threatened the chances of Nana Addo to make inroads in the Klottey Korle constituency during the November polls.

The defeated New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary aspirant for Klottey Korle, Valentino Nii Noi Nortey has declared that he will contest the upcoming November Parliamentary election as an independent candidate.

This comes after Lawyer Philip Addison secured victory in the re-run of the Klottey Korle Parliamentary polls conducted by the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He garnered 396 votes as against 367 by the former Constituency Chairman of the area, Nii Noi Nortey.

Nii Noi, at a press conference at Osu in Accra, on Wednesday stated that his decision was based on the fact that he has been unfairly treated by the party.

He won the first primary organized by the party on August 2, however, Counsel for the NPP in the 2012 Presidential petition case, Phillip Addison, who was a defeated aspirant, sued the NPP at the High Court, demanding annulment of the results.

An Accra High Court dismissed an application filed by the disputed Parliamentary Candidate, Nii Noi Nortey, which sought to set aside a default judgment thereby setting the pace for the opposition.
