Newcastle Fans Raise Funds To Build School In Ghana To Honour Christian Atsu

Supporters of the Newcastle United football club have begun a fundraising effort in memory of Christian Atsu in the hopes of completing the former wingers ambition to construct a new school in Ghana.

Tributes have poured in from his former clubs after it was confirmed that the 31-year-old winger for the Magpies and Chelsea had perished in the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria.

On Saturday at an emotional St. James’ Park, Newcastle played a minute of silence for Atsu before losing 2-0 to Liverpool, and now a fan organization, Talk of Tyneside, has initiated a charitable drive to aid a cause important to his heart.

This new school was being built with the help of Atsu, who was an ambassador for the organization Arms Around the Child.

Already over £600 has been donated to Talk of Tyneside’s Ghana relief fund, and the radio show’s hosts are appealing to listeners there to do their part to complete the work that he began there.

“Christian Atsu was a well-loved character in Tyneside, and this has been emphasised by the extent of tributes offered to him by Newcastle United Football club and its supporters,” stated Talk of Tyneside.

“Following his passing, we were hoping to find a way to give supporters a way to show appreciation for his service to the club, and raising money for a fantastic charity that he worked with feels like the perfect way to do so.”

Ellie Milner from Arms Around The Child added: “Christian touched the lives of so many with his charity work, we are determined to keep his legacy alive by raising funds to finish the school buildings in Senya Beraku – and support the children he loved so much.’
