Nana Akuffo Addo ‘beats’ three former presidents to end Sodom and Gomorrah in Ghana

The storms of criticisms against Nana Akuffo Addo’s government over some military men who somehow managed to tarnish his image are making some achievements of the president go unnoticed.

Agbogbglorshie market or Old Fadama is also known as Sodom and Gomorrah is no more as used it to be.

In the early days of this week, the military and the police have in a joint operation professionally removed the last settlers there.

The place has been labeled as Ghana’s biggest slum in the center of the capital and its existence has effectively rendered useless any dredging carry out on the Korle Lagoon.

The prospect to remove squatters from Agbogbglorshie has been on the drawing board of many presidents since 2004 but due to lack of political will, all have failed.

“Former President Kufour built a whole modern enclave for them and it didn’t work, Professor Atta Mills failed, Former President John Mahama failed.

It’s taken Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to finally relocate and reclaim the Agborbgloshie, one of the biggest challenges we had as a capital city, says a social media commentator.

With Agborbgloshie now cleared of squatters, Accra floods might be heading towards an end as a comprehensive plan for Korle Lagoon to perform its natural wetlands role in containing floods looked like it is in the pipeline.

Wetlands are natural ecological barriers that are covered by water and vegetation.

By settling there and choking the area with human waste especially the non-biodegradable ones you risk flooding a lot of places that the wetland is meant to protect.
