Former Deputy Information Minister Felix Ofosu Kwakye has chastised Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for his alleged quiet on the imposition of the 1.75 percent e-levy during the John Mahama government.
In his presentation of the 2022 budget, Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta announced a 1.75 percent tax on all electronic transactions, including mobile money.
This has sparked debate among Ghanaians in recent weeks, particularly on social media.
Analysts, taxpayers, and professionals have all joined the call for the tax to be repealed or reduced.
Felix Ofosu Kwakye, on the other hand, claims that the vice president has been mostly ignored in the debate. “The E-Levy has imposed a culture of silence on our usually loquacious Vice President Bawumia,” he wrote on Twitter @FelixKwakyeOf1.
Meanwhile, dramatic events surrounding the budget adoption have characterized parliament. The minority in parliament argued that the budget would not be approved unless the 1.75 percent tax was examined.
