Majority Lack Maturity In Their Approach In Parliament – Samuel Ntim

Samuel Ntim Darkwa, a former Clerk to Parliament, has taken a shot at the majority party in parliament.

He characterized the Majority’s approach to government business in the hung parliament as juvenile and lacking in leadership.

Mr. Ntim Darkwa, a former adviser to Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, believes the majority in parliament must find new ways to do public business.

When asked about how the New Patriotic Party (NPP) members of Parliament have performed thus far, particularly in relation to the E-levy idea, Mr Darkwa told TV3’s Komla Kluste, “I think it’s a lack of maturity.”

“Certainly, in a crisis, you must demonstrate particular leadership traits, not the same things, that, because I am in the majority, you will have your say and I will have my way.” You don’t do that because if the votes are tied on any motion before the House, that implies no one wins.

“If there are ten people voting no and ten voting yes, the motion is lost, and no one gains from it.” So, for the sake of the country, you must try this time.”

After two failed attempts following rejection by the Minority in Parliament, the Majority is having great difficulty getting the E-levy proposal adopted by Parliament.

The situation has forced the government to to organize nationwide consultations to sensitize the public on the proposal.
