Residents of Jamasi, in the Ejisu Municipality in the Ashanti Region are crying hard to the President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo Addo to fast track the passage of the awaiting Vigilante Bill as landguards takes over their community according to reports.
According to Assembly Member of the area Hon. SS Danquah the young men involved in these violent activities are boys who have been assigned by Ejisuhene to frustrate the Jamasi residents”.
“Ejisu Divisional Police Commander Chief Superintendent Ndissah says there’s nothing he can do to arrest the landguards since he’s being controlled by the Ejisuhene”. Mr. SS Danquah alleged.
Resident of Jamasi after the alleged statements of the Police Commander have vowed to attack and kill these landguards since the security agencies have refused to protect them.
The commander responding to residents said he will rather effect the arrest of the residents if they dare to attack the well-built “macho” men (Landguards).
The Assembly Member, Mr. SS Danquah further appealed to the IGP and the President to step in to the arrest of the landguards if their Commander fails to do that.
Subsequently the government of Ghana last week presented to Parliament, a Bill outlining how it intends to deal with political party vigilantism in the country and also matters such us Landguards.
The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Gloria Akuffo laid the legislation on behalf of the government.
This means that, when the bill is passed into law, all criminal activities related to political vigilantism and the issue of landguard will soon be the thing of the past as parliament is yet to approve the bill.
Both parties (NPP, NDC) have agreed in deliberations aimed at :1.Disbanding vigilante groups operating within political parties or for political purposes. 2. Prohibiting the ownership, hiring or utilization of such groups by the political parties or members thereof; 3.Cooperating with state agencies and stakeholders in the total eradication of such groups or incidence of vigilantism in the country”. The National Peace Council revealed after meeting both parties.
However, upon hearing about the good news, Mr. SS Danquah and his people have called on both the president and Parliament to protect his people the law.
