The education sector in Africa especially Ghana and Kenya is currently being surrounded by controversy. The latest one is a directive by government that all teachers under the Teachers Service Commission should under take refresher courses after every five years.
In Kenya, an announcement made by the commission’s secretary Nancy Macharia, it stated that all teachers must go to refresh their certificates by enrolling for a Teacher Professional Development program course lest they are de-registered. It created a fuss that Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi told teachers he would not fight for them this time and they should not call him. This comes fee days later after teachers and parents asked the lawyer to pass a petition in court against CBC. Havi on Sunday however accepted to help teachers to fight against the directive.
Amidst this discussion, teachers are also airing their views. A video hd gone viral of a teacher painfully saying that she won’t accept the government’s directive.
The woman identified as Florence Obai said that the government took away their union fee and other allowances but now wants them to pay for the courses. She blamed the government for trying to manipulate and push teachers to the wall.
