I Left A Stable Economy For Akufo-Addo Which Enable Him To Start Free SHS – Mahama Insists

Former President John Dramani Mahama has stated that he handed over a healthy economy to the present administration which enable him to start Free SHS, despite claims from government officials that he is to responsible for the country’s current problems.

Speaking at an NDC event to inform Ghanaians about the current state of the country, Mahama said that the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government could have at the very least built on the strong foundation that his government left behind to assist better Ghanaians’ livelihoods.

“After inheriting a stable economy that was scheduled and set for strong growth in early 2017, this administration has wasted its way into a pit from which it is impossible to emerge without heaping even greater pains and misery on Ghanaians.”

“The least that could be expected of the NPP government was for them to build on the solid foundation that had been laid for them and make incremental improvements over what they had. Instead, they’ve demolished that foundation and left our economy stranded in quicksand, sinking at an alarming rate.

“The resources that have been available to this administration, in the hands of a more responsible and prudent administration, should have resulted in quantum leaps in the standard of living of Ghanaians, and we should have recorded major progress as a nation,” Mahama said at the “Ghana at a Crossroads” program.

He went on to say that Akufo-and Addo’s his government’s incompetence has resulted in economic problems, which are wreaking havoc on practically every aspect of Ghanaians’ lives.

According to the former president, there are challenges at all levels in the domain of education, including the government’s inability to pay capitation grants to basic schools and furnish them with the required text for more than three years.

He further stated that statutory monies such as the District Assembly Common Fund and GETFund, as well as social intervention programs such as Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), have been in arrears for several months.
