Member of Parliament for Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam, Dr. Casel Ato Forson has said that the figures given out by the country’s Central Bank on the number of jobs collapsed due to the banking sector clean up is understated.
The Bank of Ghana in August 2017 began a cleanup exercise in the banking sector by revoking the licenses of insolvent financial institutions in which figures out indicated that about 10,000 jobs were collapsed but looked forward in bringing it to 3,000.
But the spokesperson for the minority NDC in Parliament on finance, Dr. Casel Ato Forson on JoyNews evening programme, PM Express said that the figures put out by the Bank of Ghana was a scam.
Reacting to the job losses he said:
“I personally don’t believe the Bank of Ghana when it says the banking sector clean up exercise cost us only 10,000 job loss.”
“My research indicates that it is close to 400,000.”
“But how can you say that,” the host, Evans Mensah interupted.
“You were once a board member of the bank. you have mates there. Are you faulting their figures” Evans querried.
Ato continued: ” yes and I would explain.”
“Evans, how do you want me to believe figures that come from a Central bank that was leading the collapse of the banks in the country?”
“Do you think it [Bank of Ghana] will give you the accurate figures? 10,000 is understated. As far as I am concerned it is close to 400,000 both direct and indirect jobs.”
But Minister for information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah on the same show adviced that despite politicians will have heated arguments on figures, it was wrong for them to say that figures coming from the Central Bank was wrong and they must desist from that.
