I believe in polygamy but can’t handle multiple wives – Rex Omar

Veteran highlife musician, Rex Owusu Marfo, known in showbiz as Rex Omar, has said he supports polygamy even though he is married to just one woman.

Faithfulness to one spouse is a hotly debated topic in African society with some cultures encouraging polygamy.

Even though some religions frown on polygamy, others, such as Islam permit a man to have more than one wife.

In showbiz circles in Ghana and Africa, some artistes are well-known to have had children with several wives.

The ‘Abiba’ hit singer finds polygamy okay if the man is capable of catering to all his wives and children.

Answering by Natalia Andoh on Class 91.3FM’s Touch of Class whether he believes in polygamy, the Chairman of the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) answered in the affirmative thus: “Yes, I do. I don’t have a problem with anybody who is involved in polygamy. It is our culture, my father had three wives”.

However, Rex Omar said he is a one-wife man, as “I’m not capable to handle two women because even one is not easy”.

Rex Omar, who shot to fame in 1989 with the ‘Aware Pa’ album which also included the track ‘Wodofo Ne Hwan’ has been married for 30 years with four children – three girls and a boy.

For him, different children from multiple women portend enmity within the family and create confusion.

Rex Omar is currently out with a classic tune titled ‘Bright Sunny Day’ which features Okyeame Kwame. He is planning various projects and music collaborations with young highlife musicians as well as the release of his autobiography in 2020.
