How NPP’s ‘strategic’ Hotel retreat to get Prof Oquaye elected Speaker backfired

It has come to light that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) organized a two-day strategic retreat to ensure that President Akufo-Addo’s candidate for the Speaker of Parliament, Prof Aaron Mike Oquaye, got elected.

According to General Secretary of the NPP, John Boadu, the National Executives left no stone unturned in working to get Professor Mike Oquaye elected as Speaker of the Eighth Parliament even though their work failed to produce the expected results.

“In the light of the foregoing, coupled with the other efforts put in place by the national executives of the NPP including the organization of a 2-day strategic retreat for all the 138 MPs-Elect, to, inter alia, ensure that the party’s nominees for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speakers, were given the nod, it would not only be untenable but also highly mischievous for anyone to seek to blame the executives for the unfortunate turn of events. Facts, they say, speak for themselves,” a statement from the Office of John Boadu said

The election of the Speaker of Parliament was contentious following violence that characterized the whole incident on the floor of parliament.

Member of Parliament for Nadowli-Kaleo, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin was elected as Speaker of Ghana’s 8th Parliament in the Fourth Republican dispensation with 138 votes against NPP’s candidate Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye who polled 136

His election came after a long night of processes that kicked right after the midnight of January 6, 2021, inaugurate Ghana’s next Parliament following the conduct of the 2020 General elections.

The election came off but without misunderstandings between the New Patriotic Party MPs-elect and their National Democratic Congress (NDC) counterparts.
