According to a researcher at the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research (KCCR) Dr Michael Owusu has stressed that the country’s health facilities could soon be overwhelmed with COVID -19 cases if new strategic measures are not put in place by government to contain the spread of the disease.
Dr Owusu who also lectures at Department of Medical Diagnostics of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) argued that given the exponential nature of the spread of the novel coronavirus disease, the country would like record higher numbers of cases that will stretch our health facilities.
“So the way this disease starts in many is that when it starts coming up in their 50s and 100s, we are able to deal with them and the recovery rate quite high and can grow substantially. But then when the health sector is already full and people are not getting access to mechanical ventilation and respiratory therapy, then we have cases where people will need help and they are not able to get that help that is when you can measure the actual prevalence of death. I think we are still not there but we should expect that in the next couple of weeks if we are not able to put in any strategic measures to deal with these cases,” he said on Accra-based Joy Fm monitored by Ghanawish.com
“So if you have quarantined cases of a 1039 and you have 78 of them having positive, what I tell myself is that two three weeks before the mandatory quarantine what it means is that four to five thousand people entered the country… Then you assume that 300 people who were supposed to self-quarantine previously as was mandated by government would have entered the country. So quite a number of people are currently walking around and infecting others but have not been tested,” he added.
Ghana’s COVID-19 cases currently stand at 152 with one recovery and 5 deaths.
As of 29th March 2020, at 10:30 hours, 11 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Ghana. Ten (10) of the new cases were among persons who were under mandatory quarantine in Tamale under the direction of the Regional Security Committee of the Northern Region. The 10 cases were Guinean residents who traveled through Burkina Faso and Togo to Ghana and were picked following intelligence report. The eleventh case was recorded in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
Ghana’s total cases now stand at 152 with five deaths.
The breakdown of cases are Accra -133 (3 dead), Northern Region, Tamale – 10 Ashanti Region – 8 (2 dead) Upper West – 1.
