Ghana Spends $200Million Annually On Importation Of Fish – Akufo-Addo

According to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Ghana spends $200 million per year on fish imports to meet its needs due to illicit, unregulated, and unreported fishing activities, which have contributed considerably to a drop in fish supplies.

Nana Akufo-Addo said a National Plan of Action is being adopted to combat the threat of illicit, unregulated, and unreported fishing activities.

Fish catch certification, reactivation and installation of vessel monitoring systems (VMS), automated identification system (AIS) on vessels, port and beach inspections, and marine patrols are all part of the strategy, he said.

Ghana, he continued, agrees with the notion of a worldwide convention in this domain.

The Ghanaian leader made these remarks on Friday, February 11th, 2022, when he attended the One Ocean Summit in Brest, France, at the request of French President Emmanuel Macron.
