ECG To Cut Power Supply To GBC And Kumasi Airport Over Debt

The Ashanti regional branch of the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG) will begin a mass disconnection exercise across the region on Wednesday, October 20, 2021.

The “Operation rectify and collect all debt” initiative will effect the state broadcaster’s Ashanti regional branch head office, which hosts Garden City radio and television.

According to KasapaFMonline report, David Asamoah, Managing Director of the Ashanti Regional ECG, the amount of debt owing by governmental bodies is impacting the region’s operations.

He stated that the national broadcaster, for example, owes ECG a debt of nearly two million Ghana cedis and has made no attempt to pay it.

According to him, the same exercise will effect the Kumasi airport corporation, as well as other commercial and private entities.

The Kumasi Kejetia market, whose power was cut off and restored on the same day, October 13, 2021, thanks to the intervention of Kumasi City Mayor Samuel Pyne, would be cut off for owing over 2.1 million cedis.

Due to a lack of funds, the ECG Ashanti MD stated that there is now a shortage of prepaid meters in the region, and that they are having difficulty replenishing to meet the demand of its clients.

As a result, the ECG is advising all clients in the region to settle any outstanding debts by Wednesday, October 20, 2021, or face the consequences.

The goal of the “operation correct and collect” is to fix all incorrect bills and recover all debts owed by ECG consumers to their power providers.
