ECG to arrest customers who transfer meters illegally

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has warned Ghanaians to desist from tampering with electricity meters without the notice of ECG.

According to them, measures have been put in place to clamp down customers and Ghanaians who tamper with meters.

The Ashanti Regional Public Relation Officer (PRO) of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Erasmus Baidoo on ‘Pure Morning Drive’ expressed worry about the rampant illegal transfer of ECG meters.

According to Erasmus Baidoo, meters are ECG properties and not the property of customers.

“Any customer who wants to transfer or relocate ECG meters should first consult ECG for approval. Though the customer bought the meter from ECG, the meter doesn’t belong to the customer. Meters are ECG properties” Baidoo said.

“Our major challenge is that we have people who illegally transfer the meters. If you illegally transfer the meter, we lose track. So then when you encounter any challenge, we won’t be in the position to assist you. Even though you go and use it elsewhere, you create a problem for us. We need to track the exact positions of all our meters so that when it’s faulty and you need our services, we can easily walk there and have it resolved, since we’ve the geographical location of it.”

Erasmus Baidoo explained that customers who illegally transfer ECG meters will be traced and arrested.

“We are warning our customers to desist from such behavior because it is illegal to transfer or tamper with ECG meters. We are appealing to Ghanaians to help us deal with such behavior and bring the perpetrators to book.”
