EC ‘Brazen Violation Ahead Of New Voters Register-Atik Mohammed

The General Secretary of the opposition People’s National Convention, Atik Mohammed describes the Electoral Commission’s (EC) approach to compiling a new voter’s register lacks the principle of fairness in consulting stakeholders.

According to him, he stressed that “I believe earnestly that the processes leading up to such an exercise must comply with acceptable standards and new register held for that purpose, must also be in conformity with democratic and legal tenets.”

” The Electoral Commission should have contacted all the political parties giving the details of contracts before announcing the date for the compilation of the new voter’s register,” Atik Mohammed told Kwaku Dawuro on “Pae Mu Ka” on Accra-based Kingdom TV.

However, “I have been particularly shocked at the level of dereliction of duty exhibited by the Electoral Commission under the leadership of Jean Mensah in the compilation of the new voter’s register.

Various political parties in Ghana have expressed their disagreement with the Electoral Commission’s to compile new voters’ register ahead of the December polls are staging a demonstration at Tamale in the Northern regional capital.

The ruling NPP, dared the largest opposition party kicking against the compilation of a new voters register, to boycott the exercise when it commences.

The EC said the system to be used to compile a new register, will include facial verification that will eliminate manual verification and ensure credibility.
