There is imminent danger at Miawani M /A Basic School in Suhum Municipality of the Eastern Region owing to collapsing school building.
Established in 1963 with a 3-unit classroom structure built with mud Miawani Primary School has never seen any major renovation. This has affected the integrity of the school building which has seriously deteriorated exposing both teachers and pupils to danger.
The school structure from class one to 3 is in tatters with dusty floors exposing teachers and pupils to harsh weather conditions and infections.
According to Mybrytfmonline.com report, Due to the deplorable condition of the school building, teachers close pupils whenever it is about to rain with the storm to avoid disaster.
The woefully inadequate teaching and learning materials including textbooks are also a major worry to the teachers.
The school has no computer lab for ICT practicals but writes examinations on the subject. Also, it has no office therefore a few teaching and learning materials are kept in unsafe rooms.
Most Teachers in the School commute about long distances to School from Suhum every day due to lack of teachers’ bungalow.
Many teachers do not accept posting while few ones who do, seek a transfer after few years in the school.
The condition of the school has affected enrollment as many parents are reluctant to enroll their school-going age children in school over safety issues hence use the children for farming.
Currently, the school has a population of 19 pupils made up of 11 Boys and 8 Girls.
Opinion leaders in the community appealed to the government and other organizations to come to their aid immediately.
