Residents of Offinso-Sakam in the Ashanti region of Offinso South municipal have appealed to the Offinso south municipal Assembly, the Member of parliament hon. Ben Abdallah Bandah and the Ghana Highways Authority, to as a matter of urgency construct speed ramps and pedestrian’s zebra crossing points at strategic locations on the main Kumasi-Techiman highway passing through the town.
Speaking to the Media, hon Agyei Mensah the assembly member for Anyinaseso electoral area, lamented that the absence of zebra crossing and speed ramps has increased death tolls of residents being knocked down by speeding vehicles whiles others sustained serious injuries at Sakam, a town in his electoral area.
The assembly member in his statistics, he made emphasis that from January to the middle of 2019, 12 natives of Sakam had fall victims of speeding vehicles, narrating that 5 of the victims including 2 children were recorded dead, whilst 7 admitted in critical conditions.
Fuseni Usman, the Zongo chief of Sakam wailed that the absence of speed ramps on the road, most drivers failed to slow down or even stop for pedestrians, and especially, children to cross the road on daylight and not to mention, the dark hours.
Some other residents expressed their grievances how rampant speeding vehicles are taking lives especially, the aged in the community.
They bitterly accounts the risk and how fearful crossing the highways has become an easiest route to death in the Sakam community where one has to wait for almost 15 minutes before crossing the road to other side.
They accused their member of Parliament and the Offinso south MCE, hon Solomon Kesse for sitting on the job for failing to call on the highways authority’s to come to their aid as innocent blood continuous to ooze on the road.
They are appealing to the Ghana highway’s engineers to reconsider road makings, roadsigns and reconstruct zebra crossing and spread ramps to eradicate difficulties of crossing the highways because most drivers on the Kumasi-Techiman road are always on top speed and if care is not taken death tolls of the pedestrians could continue to increase .
Morover, a resdident also lamented how they are suffering from a landfil in the community. according to him, he landfill is located at his residence.
