Don’t go to public hospitals from Monday – Nurses advised as they embark on strike September 21

Ghanaians and foreigners within Ghana have been advised to seek medical attention elsewhere apart from public facilities as nurses and other health workers embark on strike.

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Ghana Physician Assistants Association and the Ghana Association of Registered Anaesthetists have threatened to take a strike action if government fails to improve their conditions of service.

In a jointly signed communique, the three health professional bodies direct the over 82,000 members to lay down their tools on Monday, September 21 in protest of poor treatment by their employer.

Some concerns raised include non-payment of the allowances for frontline health workers and insurance, which were promised as part of incentives in the fight against Covid-19.

According to the statement, government remains adamant despite several negotiations over the conditions of service for the workers.

“Following series of negotiation meetings held with the Employer and the posture of same in the ongoing negotiation on the conditions of services for nurses, midwives, physician assistants and certified registered anaethetists, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) issued a communique on 4th September, 2020 informing the general membership about the posture of the Employer contrary to the provisions 97 of the Labour Law 2003 (Act 651),” part of the statement reads.

They add, “The employer is hereby notified that Nurses, midwives, physician assistants and certified registered anaethetists will withdraw their services from Monday, 21st September, 2020 if they fail to address the concerns raised by the GRNMA team.”

The general public have been advised to seek healthcare at private facilities to avoid getting stranded at government hospitals.
