Dilapidated School block ignored by Obuasi Municipal collapses on students, one in critical condition

A 13-year-old student of New Nsuta Junior High School (JHS) in the Obuasi Municipality of the Ashanti Region Bernard Opoku is said to be in critical condition after their school building collapsed on them.

Portions of the New Nsuta JHS dilapidated school structure collapsed on Friday January 22, 2020 during classes hours.

Angel FM’s Obuasi Correspondent Chuku Joseph who visited the scene, disclosed that “the students went to urinate at the back of JHS 3 building when the building collapsed on them”.

According to Chuku Joseph “the other students were able to escape when the building collapsed but the victim, Bernard Opoku was trapped in the debris. His colleagues and the teacher rushed him to Obuasi Government Hospital for treatment”.

The headmaster of the New Nsuta JHS Mr. Frederick Mensah who confirmed the incident said “we have complained about the state of the school since 2017 but nothing has been done about the situation”.

“Several complaints have been lodged with Obuasi Municipal Assembly but the situation still remains the same. It is so pathetic “He lamented.

According to Mr. Frederick Mensah, the dilapidated school structure is affecting teaching and learning in the school.

“Population of this school has been reduced due to the poor condition of the school structure. Parents always withdraw their children from this school to different schools because of the situation”.

Mr Frederick Mensah however appealed to government, NGOs and stakeholders to come to their aid to help save the school disaster.
