Queen Elizabeth II died yesterday (September 8) at the age of 96.

Ronaldo has posted an eloquent tribute to The Queen and what she meant to him, describing the monarch as ‘irreplaceable’.

The Manchester United star featured last night in the team’s Europa League defeat to Real Sociedad, with news of The Queen’s death emerging an hour before kick-off, contributing to a sombre mood at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo is in his second spell living in England as a Manchester United player and he recognises the deep affection the country had for The Queen.

He chose to pay his respects to The Queen with a tribute post on social media.

Other Manchester United players also posted in tribute to The Queen, making no reference to last night’s match.

These included English duo Harry Maguire and Jadon Sancho.

All English football fixtures have been postponed this weekend, meaning Manchester United’s game away at Crystal Palace is cancelled.

Former Red Devils star Gary Neville had posted on Twitter to say he disagreed with the decision to call off games.

United’s game at home to Leeds is also under threat next weekend as the country begins a period of national mourning, although no announcement has been made about that, or the Europa League fixture with Sheriff Tiraspol next week.
