Country music legend John Prine dies from coronavirus at aged 73

The songwriter, best known for hits like Angel from Montgomery, passed away on Tuesday (7 April) at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, his family confirmed to People.  He had suffered complications with the Covid-19 virus, that has so far claimed the lives of more than 82,000 people worldwide.

Prine was rushed to hospital last week after experiencing a ‘sudden onset’ of coronavirus symptoms and was said to be in ‘critical condition’.

Tributes for Prine have poured in from the country music world, with Bruce Springsteen leading the condolences, writing: ‘Over here on E Street, we are crushed by the loss of John Prine. John and I were “New Dylans” together in the early 70s and he was never anything but the lovliest guy in the world. A true national treasure and a songwriter for the ages. We send our love and prayers to his family.’

The Grand Ole Opry wrote on their account: ‘From gracing the Opry House stage for those memorable New Year’s Eve shows to other special Opry appearances including one alongside the StreelDrivers and Bill Murray, John Prine has touched our hearts with his music. We are thinking of his family and friends tonight.’

Talk show host Stephen Colbert said: ‘With a heavy heart, but deep love and gratitude for his gift he gave us all- Goodbye, John Prine.’

Prine was intubated on Saturday, which is where a tube is inserted into the mouth and airway, so that a patient can be placed on a ventilator to aid their breathing.  Relatives of the musician shared an update on his health last Sunday, writing in an Instagram post: ‘This is hard news for us to share.

‘But so many of you have loved and supported John over the years, we wanted to let you know, and give you the chance to send on more of that love and support now. And know that we love you, and John loves you.’
