The owner and driver of a Kia Rhino truck with registration number GS 5491-13 were on Friday, 4 October 2019 arrested by a police highway patrol team when the cops found three sacks full of a substance believed to be Indian hemp in the vehicle on the Accra-Tema motorway stretch.
While on its ‘Operation Intensive Stop and Search’ duties, the patrol team discovered 113 parcels of the substance hidden among bags of okra.
Upon interrogation, the driver insisted that the sacks were loaded with okra to be delivered in Accra.
However, when the driver was told that he was being arrested for carrying a banned substance, he and the owner of the substance offered the police officers GHS16,460 as bribe but the team rejected it and arrested the two suspects.
Five other persons have also been arrested in connection with the substance found in the vehicle.
