Cancel Free SHS before its too late – KOD tells Akufo Addo

Ghanaian media personality, KOD has added his voice to the ‘Free SHS’ brouhaha which is constantly causing the government to borrow more.

In a recent speech by former President John Dramani Mahama, he urged President Akufo-Addo to eat the humble pie and seek help for the woes of the economy and the hasty implementation of the Free SHS.

According to Mahama, the Free SHS policy just like many government policies was not implemented well hence the president should seek advice and help from those who have done it before.

Adding his voice to the ‘Free SHS’ policy which according to many experts, Ghana’s capacity to continue is in doubt, KOD in a Facebook post stated that the government should instead empower parents so that they can be accountable for their children.

His scepticism comes from the Deputy Finance Minister’s assertion that borrowing will be required to fund the government’s flagship initiative.

In the Facebook post, KOD wrote;

“Very worrying! I believe every child deserves to be educated, but I’m not a supporter of free SHS based on the financial strength of our country. Parents have a responsibility towards their children and if the government wants to support them, they should create an environment for parents to earn more to take care of their wards.

He feels that, given Ghana’s financial situation, keeping the program will be tough.

If we’re borrowing more to sustain free SHS, it means it’s not something we can sustain as a nation. Takes us back if you ask me….We need to work on a national agenda and stop party manifestos every 4 years. It takes us back. Can’t we have a 100-year plan where governments just come and go and execute developmental projects based on the established blueprint instead of manifestos?”
