“Buy Ghana rice” campaign will fail if farmers don’t reduce prices – Dumelo

Actor cum Politician, John Dumelo is calling for the reduction in prices of locally produced rice in order to boost patronage ahead of the christmas festivities.

John Dumelo, himself a farmer, is urging colleagues to “do something about their pricing” if the campaign to boost the consumption of locally produced products is to be sustained.

According to him, the “patriotic patience of Ghanaians will quickly run out if our local farmers don’t do anything about their pricing”

He makes the case that imported rice, even after paying shipping and duties at the port, still cost cheaper than locally made rice, hence, its high patronage among Ghanaians.

“It will Interest you to know that imported rice (after paying all the shipping and duties at the port) is still cheaper than our local rice. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a farmer and a huge advocate for consumption of made in Ghana products but the patriotic patience of Ghanaians will quickly run out if our local rice farmers don’t do anything about their pricing” John Dumelo said in a social media post.

John Dumelo adds that since the pricing of local rice was not solely dependent on the farmers, more must be done to support them.

It might not be the fault of the farmers when pricing. The unit cost of producing a bag of rice depends on external factors (high interest rates, taxes, fuel costs etc) which is beyond their control. We must do more to support farmers across the country. Competitive pricing and branding are sine qua non to Ghanaians being patriotic but all hope is not lost. Ghana shall prosper

John Dumelo’s comments follow a widespread campaign for the consumption of made in Ghana rice.

The campaign is aimed at growing the Ghanaian economy.
